Oh, what a relief it is!
If you are in the US, and you have been horrified by our President and Congress in the last 2 years, you are celebrating this week. On Tuesday, we reminded everyone, including ourselves, in the most emphatic way, of who we are and what this country has always, and continues to stand for. There is still work to be done, but we took that first big step, and I for one am giddy with hope for the future.
Everyone matters. Period. EVERYONE. The vote on Tuesday all across the country was a clear repudiation of the belief that some matter more than others, and that money matters more than the environment and people.
Not so, bucko! Satan, get thee behind me, and take your MAGA cult folks with you. Poor souls, they were misled by their churches and their party leaders, and they believed they were on the righteous ones. However, if they had really read the Bible they supposedly cling to, or the Koran, or any Buddhist or Hindu text, they would have realized that they were on the wrong path, following the wrong guys.
This is their opportunity to see the light, but I doubt they will. They are angry and deluded, and clearly not used to critical thinking. Too bad. I can’t imagine a more miserable way to live than to think everybody’s doing you wrong.
The MAGA folks matter, also, of course, no more or less than anyone else, and I hope someday they find their way to that realization, but it would require them to climb down off the cross, and realize they don’t belong there and they’ve misunderstood the main guy in their religion and made a mess of things. Seems unlikely. No one likes to admit they got it wrong.
In the meantime, the rest of us will be over here, taking care of people, including everybody in everything, funding programs that help people who need help. That’s what Jesus would do, kids, and as it turns out, that’s the winning team, after all.
Equality. Now and forever. Gender, original or not, skin color, sexual orientation, place of birth, all of it. We’re all equal. No exceptions. No disqualifications for being human in any way, or the way you choose to live your life. All have the same beating hearts, the breath of life, and big brains. Ditto respect for the rest of the beings on the planet and the Earth herself.
Equality.
Now and forever.
I don’t believe in Heaven or Hell. I think being angry and resentful of people who are not like you all the time, is Hell on earth, and that must be miserable. In 2024, after the shock of that election, I wrote “This, too.” In my journal many times, reminding myself that in life and in a democracy, anything can happen, and everyone matters. Including, and especially, people who do not think as I do. That’s the very definition of democracy.
So we tried it their way, one last time, I hope, and found, oh gee, that’s right, it doesn’t work! That’s not who we are mostly, fundamentally, as Americans, as human beings, as residents of a fragile planet. Tuesday, we used our democracy to say, “Enough!” Been there, done that. Now, let’s get back to the real work of making everyone’s lives better..
Cheers to the protesters and the courts who have held the line for 2 years. It’s the vote that brings the changes, though, and now that’s in the books, too.
We’re back, baby, and we’re going to fix it all now. Mend our fences with the rest of the world, and get on with it. For the folks here, for the ones wholly unrepresented for 2 full years. For the world. The citizens have spoken, clearly and loudly, and pity on anyone who didn’t get the message, especially the old guard in our Congress. Change is coming.
Get ready.
P.S. If you’re too young to know what the title refers to, or not from this country, it was the jingle to an Alka-Seltzer (antacid) commercial a while ago.
